danger:
I took my two very playful dogs to the dog park thinking it would be good because of the temperament testing and thinking that if people are paying they must be responsible owners. WRONG! The only interaction with other dogs in the testing was to walk n up to a fence where there are other dogs. That was fine for my dog but I'm wondering what they learned about the dogs who attacked her in the park.

The first time my dog was bit by another dog they gave the owner a warning and told me it was because the biter was a puppy who needed training. That was probably true but not ok. Why did they not require the training.

The second time my same dog was bit was a week later. The other dog was growling, baring it's teeth and flattened my 55 lb dog to the ground. By the time I got to my girl and extricated her she was bleeding all over her neck. Then the aggressive dog went on to get in a fight with another dog while we were leaving.

I spoke to the owner and manager. In my opinion, the owner (the wife) came off as a condescending and uncaring B****. The manager, Beth, said it was "typical dog behavior." Beth is also a dog trainer. Beware, because she seems to consider dog interaction leaving one dog a bloody mess typical dog play.

I hadnt thought about leaving a review until we were at the vet, Riverview Animal Clinic, last week (12/12/14) for another matter and I mentioned this park. The doctor told me they had stitched up two dogs from that park in the last 7 days.

I called a lady I've known forever who takes her dog there daily and she said the second dog who bit my girl was the same dog that attacked one of the dogs who needed stitches. What a surprise. I wish I knew who it was as the owners could and should have prevented this one.

I get that bad things can happen anywhere but we have never had problems like this at the public parks and the way the owners of this facility handle them is awful. Save your money or BEWARE.

Don't take your dog there:
I have toured this place a couple of times AND my sister works there. NEVER TAKE YOUR DOG THERE!!! It is grossly understaffed. The daycare dogs are just thrown into these GIANT play groups. Groups can get up to 60-70 dogs with only one or two staff members outside with the dogs. The large dogs have two people. The small dogs only have one. They only have two groups- large or small. Nothing in between. So senior dogs are with high energy young dogs. Wild lab puppies are with 10 year old pugs. All based on size. Never based on temperament. They even had a wild adult golden retriever with the small dogs once b/c the manger said if he was with the large dogs, they would "kill him." How's is that okay?!?! So it's okay for him to trample all over tiny chihuahuas?! And why would the large dogs kill him? Are they too aggressive?
My sister told me that boarding dogs whose owners request that they don't do daycare and be walked alone sometimes don't get their first potty break until 9:00 AM b/c there are SO MANY dogs and not enough staff. They tell the clients that these dogs get 3 10-minute potty breaks. But in reality, they are lucky if they can get them 2 1-minutes potty breaks.
The staff turnover rate is so high because the management is so horrible. Staff isn't trained at all. They are just thrown into the job. She said that there are all kinds of cleaning chemicals used and no one knows how to mix them because the manager doesn't teach anyone how to. And those who ask get ridiculed and then dismissed. And all of them are told different measurements. So the staff is just mixing stuff and hoping for the best. It's an OSHA nightmare. She said there isn't even enough time or staff to clean the kennels in between boarding dogs. So a new boarding dog will be put into a kennel with the previous dog's urine or feces still left in there.
If a dog is being aggressive and the staff requests to put them back inside for a while for safety reasons, the manager does not let them. The manager once said that "without all the bad dogs, there wouldn't be enough dogs at daycare for me to get my paycheck." A chocolate lab once had a seizure on the daycare yard and the manager wouldn't even let them put her up after having a seizure!! Another dog was bit on her nose- a puncture over a quarter of an inch deep. My sister is also a vet tech. She knows how to clean a wound. And she knows when a vet is needed. Well the manager wouldn't call the vet and then made my sister clean the would with ear cleaner for a yeast/fungal infection. Ear cleaner!!!!!
The manager is also the dog trainer. How she still has a job, I have no idea. The website says she is a behaviorist, but to call yourself a "behaviorist" you are supposed to have a Masters or PhD in actual behavior. She has neither. So she's also a liar. And my sister told me that she is incredibly rough with the dogs. She once put a leash and collar on a dog so tight and pulled him around so roughly that he vomited everywhere within minutes. This woman shouldn't be allowed around dogs, but she is running Cahaba Beach Dog Park.
Alabama doesn't have a law that regulates how boarding kennels and doggie daycares are ran so there is no one to report this woman to. All I can do is try to educate the public on the substandard conditions of Cahaba Beach Dog Park.
