Tips

New York has had its share of Roman restaurants, but a Roman grocery? This Nolita enoteca aims to capture the everyday feeling of “La Citta Eterna,” and not just its Fellini-esque nightlife. In a setting of weathered wood and distressed white tile meant to evoke the 1920s, Emporio serves up Roman specialties like rabbit braised in white wine, fava beans with mint and pecorino, and (of course) the city's signature pasta: tonarelli cacio e pepe (pecorino and black pepper). Pastas run the gamut, including some in-house concocted creations that fall slightly flat...

I hate the menu at the sort-of-Roman downtown restaurant called Emporio—hate it because choosing just a few things from it is all but impossible. Whipped baccalà with crispy polenta; roasted beets with pickled onion and smoked ricotta; risotto with wild mushrooms and fava beans—how to decide? Here, I'll narrow it down a little: Forget the bland mozzarella-stuffed squash blossoms and the gristly...

Classic dishes of Rome, actually served in Little Italy (ok, Nolita). Emporio, a rustic Roman-style trattoria, springs from the same well as the two successful Aurora restaurants in Brooklyn and SoHo.

Literally an Emporio, the restaurant sells a superior selection of quality Italian provisions offering Italian and local cheese, artisanal and house cured charcuterie, raw bar, fritti, wood-fired...
