Hoi Polloi Warning: Waiters often focus on the business-lunch or -dinner tables and the rest of us get what's leftover of their attention.

Dependable Meals at a Conference: I always have breakfast (and either lunch or drinks) in Il Fornaio whenever I am in San Jose for a conference. Generally, I try the pasta or pizza when I'm there to eat and the wine list/bar is good. It's conveniently located in a hotel adjacent to the Marriott and the San Jose Convention center on Market Street, so you can't miss it. Also, it has a cafe if you just need to grab an espresso and a muffin and dash over to the convention center floor. The food is always good and dependable and I have never had less than excellent service from the staff.

And despite the double stigma of being both a hotel restaurant and a chain, Silicon Valley movers and shakers still stop in to conduct business over a little omelette ai formaggi at breakfast ...

Everyone loves this sunny Italian trattoria, which brought rustic Italian breads to California years ago. Newspapers are available at the espresso bar, plump chickens turn on the rotisserie and that famous fresh bread is baked in the back twice daily. Enjoy the focaccia and breadsticks and stick with the Italian basics: salads, pizzas, pastas and that juicy chicken. Stop by in the morning for a steaming ...
