Another Austin classic, LZR has departed from its funky roots to go a bit upmarket, featuring bigger names and bigger covers than in the past. But the venue has remained the same -- a renovated garage brightly painted with monsters and filled with kitschy memorabilia -- and this is still a fun place to listen to good bands, from the Gourds to Mose Allison to Greg Allman and Friends.
It’s easy to get sucked into a bad view at this go-to for can't-miss touring rock bands. Dead-centerstage is a natural starting spot. But the perpetually bearded pack it there in a hurry. To the right is a wall. To the left is a wide open space that completes the half-baked floor plan. To the left it is, then. Alas, the sacrifice that’s made is a giant speaker that now obstructs the view. Stuck...
