Bad front office experience:
My son’s pediatrician referred us to Dr. Ha. We were not able to see him but an appointment with Dr. Moreland was arranged fairly quickly. Our pediatric office faxed over a referral even though they didn’t think we needed one. They also gave me notes and a written referral to bring. My husband called our insurance since our policy name had changed this year. They informed us that referrals for OBGYNs and determatologists were not needed with our plan.
Our poor review of this office is not truly insurance related. I would never recommend the office to a friend because of the front office staff. I had prepared all of the paperwork in advance and signed my son in. The front receptionist asked for my insurance card and driver’s license. She was curt and unfriendly from the beginning. I gave her the requested cards along with my documentation. We sat in the waiting room for about 15 minutes before I was called up and told that my referral was not adequate. I told her that my husband confirmed with AETNA that we did not need a referral for dermatologists. She rolled her eyes and was obviously annoyed. A technician came up and asked her a question and she said “can’t you see that I am dealing with a problem here?” She went back and talked to the billing manager. I could hear her complaining. The business manager came up and said “you need a referral and your doctor’s office did not send the appropriate paperwork. You will have to reschedule.” I repeated that my husband had called our insurance and that a referral was not necessary. I told her that I would call the pediatrician or insurance if she needed additional confirmation. She was short with me and said “there is not enough time for that, you will just need to reschedule.” I have four kids and had to have a babysitter to make that appointment. When I spoke to the pediatric office they were astonished that they wouldn’t just call. They said that it would have taken only minutes to supply them with additional info.
My daughter saw a different dermatologist this January and we had no problem. The office personnel was not only unfriendly, and unhelpful, but they behaved rudely and unprofessionally. We were unable to actually see the doctor. We are going to another doctor in Tyson’s corner tomorrow morning. We did confirm with our insurance that referrals are not needed and they were surprised that the office would not have called them. If you have a choice, support a office with nicer personnel.
