The small wine list draws adequate vintages from several countries, most around $35. A very pleasant quaff was the 1999 Alexander Valley merlot ($36), typically soft and accessible but with surprisingly intense earthy-spicy notes.

With its shady back-way entrance and its schmaltzy piano bar, the place harkens to a more cloak-and-dagger era of gay nightlife. And in fact, the place can be pretty gay. But it's also pretty straight. Offering a united, if dimly lit, screw-the-Bush-administration vibe plus quality neighborhood dining.
