The Extras: It's a gimmick, but the $41 hefty burger made of Kobe-style beef is a delicious, ridiculous indulgence. It comes with decent shoestring fries, but don't bother: You'll need all the room you can muster to get your money's worth.

STEAKHOUSE. You'll know the place by the cow on the awning. Long before the artists' cows appeared all over the city a few years ago, the Old Homestead had one, which may be a clue to the restaurant's sly anticipation of hipness: It's been in the Meat District since before there was a Meat District.

You can't miss the huge cow mounted above the Old Homestead's entrance, and this old-school steakhouse continues to please, even after nearly 140 years. While its newer neighbors Pop Burger and Pizza Bar symbolize the current trends in Meatpacking District dining, the charming and convivial atmosphere of Old Homestead make it well worth the high prices.
