Logan, there’s something wrong with your logic here: saying that ‘he could have told me that before doing the test’ is not correct. He was doing the test when he “saw” (visual part of the test) the problem. Stopping the test at that point creates an “abort” and raises a flag with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (Big Brother, for the smog techs). Smog techs can get in trouble for what the general public thinks are the smallest things. To ask them to do what you think is allowed is to ask them to jeopardize their license. In essence, “Come buddy give me a break and just lie about it and I’ll think you’re cool” is what you’re really asking …not cool. And for others that think the same way as Logan here and would go along with the “Ahh, come on man” mentality just misses the point of the technician having to follow rules or risk the chance of getting caught, fined, and/or losing their license. Come on man, give the smog tech a break. If he’s rude then that’s an altogether thing and should change his attitude.

So I went in to get my Jeep smogged, with the coupon from which said it would be $29.75 $8.25 for the cert. Well, he wouldnt honor the coupon because he said my Jeep wasnt a "car" and then his ATM/credit card machine wasnt working, and he wouldnt take a check. I had to walk all the way over to RALPHS to get cash!!! THEN he failed my "car" b/c the gas cap failed the pressure check, and said there was NO FREE RECHECK. I would have to go buy a $8 gas cap, and come back and pay ANOTHER $55!!!! This guy is a real PITA. Save yourself some money and go to one of those Pass-or-dont-pay places. What a ripoff!!!

My truck failed, which is fine. When I asked him what he recommends, he was very rude and short with me and told me to take it to a repair shop; not even telling me why it didn't pass. Also, when I got home and looked at the bill, he had charged me for things that you only need IF you pass!! There are many other facilities like this nearby that will give a FREE re-test if you don't pass the first time, and are about 20-30 dollars cheaper. No free re-test here. You get a "discount" off the next test, which, with his tricky mathematic skills, will be about the same as without a discount. Hes a jerk and a crook!

I called a few shops and Smog This says he'll give me service for $50. We set an appointment for 11am. I show up at 11:07 due to delays at the Post Office. He tells me that since I'm late it's $60. There was no one else in line or getting serviced but I agree to pay for convenience. After 25 or so minutes he says the car fails. He opens the hood and a PCV hose has a big crack, something that will guarantee failure and he could have told me that before doing the test. Nope, he claims he did the test anyway even though the dealer and a different shop (Oceanside Smog) said they would not have done the test or charged me in the first place. Then he says to fix the problem and come back and he'll only charge me $50. I said other places offer a free follow-up if it fails or won't even charge. He says he's been in the business nearly 20 years and no one does this. The next day I fix the PCV hose and come back and ask again if he's still charging the full $50 and I mention two places that offer free re-test if one fails and he says he doesn't want to hear about it...so I walk out and go to Oceanside Smog where I was told that if it fails they won't charge. He had a nasty power hungry attitude. I'll never give him service again.
