Description

casual family restaurant is the cornerstone of a great Chicago neighborhood. ELEVEN is a hybrid of my sincere respect for what family “dining rooms” used to be. I do hope that our restaurant rekindles the feelings of true friendly “diners”—the type of quality restaurants so many of us grew up with (and still crave) which have slowly, but steadily, disappeared from our city’s street corners.

What to Drink: For an old-fashioned date night, snag a couple of counter stools and ask the soda jerk for an egg cream or malted milkshake to share.

Eleven City Diner Restaurant Review:
Vintage-cool décor and a hip diner vibe pervade this space, which fills with business people and students from Columbia College next door. Start with mini Reuben sandwiches, followed by The Woody Allen, a triple-decker sandwich from Carnegie Deli in New York that alternates corned beef and pastrami on soft rye. If you come for dinner, count on heftier options, too, like tender brisket or...

"Stacked sandwiches", "soothing" matzo ball soup and other "traditional" "Jewish deli" standards bring noshers to this "solid" South Looper (with a Lincoln Park sequel) in a "diner"-meets–"art deco"–styled space complete with a soda fountain; service gets mixed marks ("fun" vs. "difficult") and some find "big bills" surprising for the genre, but devotees kvell it's "well worth the price for the...

For all its great food, Chicago is not a big deli town, which endears Eleven City Diner, an old-school deli and family restaurant in the South Loop, to the locals. You can get breakfast all day (latkes and lox are popular, as is the "hoppel poppel": scrambled eggs with salami, potatoes, onions, and peppers) but deli staples like matzo-ball soup and pastrami and corned-beef sandwiches shouldn't...
