Former Employee Remembers:
Craig Winquist, owner, opened the Firehouse for New Year's 1969, as I recall. I worked as a busboy in 1971. After a stint in the military, I returned in about 1976 and started tending bar. I stayed there on and off for about 7 years. The Rueben sandwiches were delicious, as well as just about everything on the menu. Craig was an ex-green beret, about 6'6", and a lot of fun to work with. Ron, his brother, tended bar during the day. I worked with some great people through the years: Doug, a cook who doubled as a male dancer, Arpod, a cook, Jamie the waitress who asked if you wanted a "toddy for the body," Hal, the bartender, Johnny, and so many more employees through those years. The Firehouse at that time was one of two great steak houses in Tempe, the other being Monti's. We had a great lunch crowd and weekend nights were packed. I will always have fond memories of the people at the Firehouse and would love to hear from anyone from those days. I understand Craig sold to Long Wong's in the late '90s.
