I had the bad luck to have my dog being treated by Dr Ghere and his staff at Prytania Veterinary Hospital:
Dr Ghere is an individual whose big ego wants to cover a total lack of professionalism, self-sufficiency, and tendency to cover up shortcomings in judgments and actions. I did the huge mistake to trust Dr Ghere and followed his recommendations without questioning his professional skills until it was too late and my dog paid with his life.
For many years my dog had skin infections called by his vet 'allergies' for which he was doped with antibiotics but no tests were made to find the causes. When the dog got arthritis, I had to ask myself what meds could be prescribed to alleviate his pain. Last summer, my dog had a tumor at neck removed at the recommendation of his vet. Unfortunately, after surgery, it turned out to be cancer and I was told to wait and see if it comes back. The tumor came back and was again removed at Prytania - this time being finally directed to a specialist who explained the options. I chose the most aggressive way to fight with the disease, surgery and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the surgery left my dog unable to use his back legs and despite my inquiries to Dr Ghere, the only answer I got was again to wait and see. After keeping asking, I had the dog going to some therapy sessions. At the end of December while my dog was at Prytania, I was called to come at the clinic because he collapsed. Once I reached there, I asked the personnel if one could give us a ride to the hospital. Even though it was saturday, end of work, nobody offered and jeopardized my dog's life by delaying his transportation. It was a cab driver who was kind to trust and took us. I was later told by Dr Ghere that they do not have to do it - and these are the people supposed to care and be compassionate for those suffering!
At Southeast Vet., I was informed by Dr Cantor, based on his blood tests and a quick ultrasound made by a non specialist that the cancer has spread and he is in pain and I should end his life. I was overwhelmed and asked many times Dr Cantor about the certitude in her diagnosis and she confirmed, giving accuracy higher than 90%. Dr Ghere also confirmed by phone, in a one minute conversation, and strongly recommended that I should end my dog's life.
So, I did because I trusted people who were supposed to know or to admit when they do not know. Since I felt something was wrong, I asked Dr Ghere in January for my dog's records, with the only intention to understand what happen and to learn from mistakes. Surprisingly, he immediately agreed and even offered to send them to a specialist for another opinion. It proved later that this was just one of his maneuvers to gain time. It took 5 month to finally get the records, during which I asked each week and I was given the most offensive excuses and lies by Dr Ghere - the files are too long to be emailed, the USB provided by me got smashed in his bag, and finally, because I said it was not a hurry! Very sadly, when finally got them, I found out there was nothing in those records to indicate that cancer was spread, contrary to what I had been told months ago. I also found several inaccuracies added. When confronted Dr Ghere in unpleasant discussions, he finally admitted that indeed, neither the blood tests nor ultrasound were conclusive and decisive tools to confirm the spread of cancer. Had also to correct the cover-up the notes in his records. It took me 5 months, a lot of research and patience to deal with such unprofessional individual, for whom is more important to look right than to find the truth and admit mistakes. To take revenge, because I challenged his judgment and called his lies, Dr Ghere threw away my other dog who is rescued and heartworm positive in the middle of the treatment!! That finally turned out to be the best thing he did since now at least this dog is surrounded by people who genuinely care about their patients.
