Description

A Detroit favorite, Slows Bar BQ serves up delectable dishes like Carolina Pulled Pork and St. Louis Spareribs in an ambiance that is warm, cozy and inviting. With wood-paneled and furnished interiors and dull-lighting, this eatery is a great place for a meal with family or friends. The mouthwatering menu here also features the loaded sandwiches and delicious melt-in-your-mouth pork belly. To...

Terrible Service RUDE and YUK food:
My wife and I went there with some friends following a trip to the Historical Museum. Our friends arrived there before we did, and were told that they could not be seated until the party was complete. When we did arrive, the hostess was rude and condescending about finally having our party together, and dumped us at a table near the kitchen dismissively.
My wife and I shared the Sweet Pea and Okra Fritters, which were essentially gooey green balls wrapped in tasteless fried batter. Never having been at Slow's before, I figured that I would try the Carolina BBQ (it does say BBQ on the sign). It was awful. I only had a few bites, and each contained a healthy dose of fat or gristle. The dish had very little flavor of its own, so I tried it with the sauces on the table. The sauces were a horrible disappointment: watery and runny, overly sweet, no depth of flavor at all. I could not discern a different between "Sweet" and "Spicy", and the "NC" was like weak Buffalo sauce. I ended up leaving most of my meal untouched. My wife's chicken was adequate (the rub was good, but didn't penetrate the meat) and I liked my sweet potato mash and her baked beans, but both of our green beans were overcooked and bland. Our friends seemed fine with sandwiches, but no one complimented their meal.
Frankly, I normally would have asked to see the chef, but I didn't want to interrupt some nice dinner conversation. That being said, I was a little surprised that no one at Slow's seemed to care that one of their signature dishes was being returned to the kitchen untouched. Since I had basically felt like a wallet with legs up to that point, I suppose that I shouldn't have been surprised at all.
Our server was a nice guy, and he was pretty attentive, but I don't much think he earned the automatic 18% gratuity (with an extra line if I wanted to leave more) that they applied for a party of only six people.
Wild horses couldn't drag me back to Slow's, but if one did, I might worry it would end up on my plate, shredded, with a side of cadmium-colored corn syrup.

7 Hot Places To Grab BBQ in Detroit:
While Detroit doesn't lay claim to any one particular style of barbecue, restaurants around town and in the 'burbs are serving up meaty favorites with sticky sweet sauces all the way down the line to Carolina-style vinegar based sauce. Here's a smattering of where to fire up Detroit and the Metro's barbeque scene for Eater's The Five Days Of Meat. Where to find the best 'cue is always a...

Summer is in full swing, which means it's time for a new edition of the Detroit Eater 38 . This regular feature seeks to list the city's key dining establishments (with a few representatives from the suburbs), on both the high and low end of the scale and with a special emphasis on the defining meals that make the city and region move.

This is our answer to that age-old question, "Can you...

World Cup 2014: Where to Watch Today:
The American's have an epic match against Belgium this afternoon at 4:00 p.m., and nobody will be working so head out early to one of the places on the World Cup 2014 Map. Americans may not be as well-known as the soccer football fans in other parts of the world, but for the World Cup, things change. Most faithful of all are the expats though, whether English, Spanish, Italian, or otherwise,...

CORKTOWN— Congratulations to Slow's Bar-B-Q who made the Huffington Post's Best Bacon Burgers in the US list this week. Anyone who's tried it already knows that it's world-class and the Huff-Po praises its "patty-melt-style... topped with smoked Gouda, sweet house-made barbecue sauce, hot-sauce-spiked onions and house-smoked thick-cut bacon." Information from the business

We have been serving our version of classic American barbecue since September 2005. We’ve won some awards and received some tremendous accolades along the way. Even more gratifying is the amazing word of mouth publicity we’ve received —starting even before we opened the doors. Thanks to all of you who have said nice things about us and what we’re doing here in Detroit. Hope you can come and...
