Carnival of Incompetence:
Carnival of Incompetence. Short version: I paid Venesky's $78.84 to diagnose my washing machine which they failed to do correctly, providing me with a false diagnosis and causing me a great deal of hardship in the meantime. They have refused to take responsibility for this and/or give me a refund for services not-rendered.

I called Venesky Appliance to fix my washing machine in November. I told them that I had run the self-diagnosis on the machine and that it read out error code 47: "Board thinks the door PTC circuit is open in spin." I gave this information to them again, as per their request, via email on 11/10/12. The technician (Chris) came out on 11/21/12 and diagnosed my washing machine with error code 43: "Need to replace control board," referencing the same tech sheet that came with the machine that I had used. He told us that there was an 80% chance it was the control board and 20% chance the motor was actually the problem and quoted us approximately $170 for the control board and $180 for the motor and $10 for return service. Not being an appliance technician myself, I deferred to his judgment in this. He said (per the invoice) that he would research the part numbers since the model number had been worn off the machine. He also said that there was another customer with a similar washer that needed replacing which, if it was replaced through them, would furnish him with parts which he could then give (at a discount?) to us, greatly reducing the cost. We were charged $78.84 for this diagnosis.

About a month went by and I had heard nothing back from either Chris or Venesky's. I called them again in December to check on their status and was told a) that they had not been able to get the part/washer from the other customer and b) they had zeroed out my account and had no record of my invoice (thankfully I kept my copy). I told them that I really just needed them to fix the washer at this point and to go ahead and order whatever parts they need. The woman I spoke with (Chris Lafrate, company owner) then said that since the model number was worn off and illegible, they couldn't order parts or do any kind of repair work on it. I researched the model number of the machine and even opened up the bottom panel and got the make and model information off of the individual parts (control board and motor) and gave Venesky's that information (via email, copies available upon request). Since they offered no guarantee for parts (no refund/return if it didn't work) I called them again (1/18/12) and asked if before they order any parts they could at least guarantee their original diagnosis, which Ms. Lafrate refused to do (she could not seem to get past the worn off model number).

At this point I called another repair-person to see if he would be able to do the work. He offered to re-diagnose the washing machine for free, was there the next day (1/19/12) and was able to fix the ERROR 47 BOARD THINKS THE PTC CIRCUIT IS OPEN IN SPIN on the spot, and never so much as glanced at the model number. As a point of interest, he charged me $40 for the service call and $35 for the part, including tax, less than I was charged by Venesky to "diagnose" the washer. I'm willing to accept that people make mistakes. I am not, however, willing to pay people $80 to make them (and waste as much of my time as they possibly can in the process). Venesky's point-blank refused to take any kind of responsibility for their mistake, which was a CHOICE they made. I have contacted the BBB and NYS DOS Division of Consumer Protection. If no satisfactory response is received I will then file a claim against them in small claims court.

Additional note: Terrible customer service. Rarely have I encountered a company with such flagrant disregard for the satisfaction of their customer. In the process of communicating with Venesky's I have had both my intelligence and integrity called into question, though I suppose I deserve to have my intelligence questioned for sticking with them as long as I did.
