Can be good and really bad:
I shop there once in a while and just like the overall tone of the reviews my feelings are mixed. But I have a big gripe with them, see the last paragraph below.
I don't expect a small store with such a big and varied range of merchandise to match Home Depot prices but if you are in a hurry it is a convenient place. The people who work there mostly know what they have and can be very helpful trying to match an unusual hardware item. The Hispanic guy is the friendliest and most helpful one.
Being slightly disabled the Food Emporium down the road once assumed I was there to redeem bottles and cans for cash when I approached a manager to return a faulty item -- but the guys in American Home let me roam the isles freely without following me around or acting suspicious.
The one big gripe I have with them is that when an Indian-American owned store with a mostly different but slightly overlapping range of merchandise opened around the corner they put a BIG sign in the window saying **they** were an AMERICAN owned store. American Home & Hardware is owned by Russian-Americans, of course. Ever since then I've tried the other store first as I really can't stomach that kind of attitude.

Just terrible!:
I bought a defective cart from these guys to carry around my groceries and when I went to return it after it broke in less then 2 months they wanted me to buy a new one for my troubles! They said that the manufacture does not back up their products so they would not get their money back. So I guess that's the customers responsibility? Never knew that because any time I've ever bought anything from Bed Bath and Beyond or the Home Depot they have always returned defective products for me. No wonder places like these are going out of business... this was a very cheap product and would have been easy for them to give me a new one or just give me my money back but they did neither.
Rude and Expensive, What a Winning Combination!:
Someone please buy the owner of this place a book on basic etiquette.
