Tips

When to Go:
Although Aldine Books has set store hours, the owner is the sole employee, which means he is often out buying books. Call first to be safe.

The Extras:
At first glance, the books seem disorganized, but closer inspection will show that most books are properly categorized and in alphabetical order by author.

Worth a visit - possible hidden teasures:
I've gone to Aldine Books for many years, in it's many incarnations. I was friends with Al Kronfeld, who founded the place. Now Ira G. owns and runs it with the help of his friend Nate. Ira is bearded, bespectacled, conservative and quite a character. He was kind enough to build three excellent bookshelves for me years ago (cheap.)The bookstore has interesting books amongst the dross and inappropriate porn boxes. Excellent middle-east politics section. Good array of large art and photog books. Good paperbacks wedged in the back room. You have to really hunt for it here. At times it seems like the books on the shelves have not changed for years. Then you find something pretty nifty and you keep coming back. Also, the mere fact that it is one of the few old-school bookstores with character, albeit creepy at times. Ira is opening a 2nd shop next to Mondo video on Melrose near Heliotrope.
