Worst experience I've ever had with a contractor!:
The day began with Mike, his crew, and many trucks showing up at my home at 8 AM instead of between 9 and 9:30 as he told me. He asked me to walk the property as I stood there in my PJ's. Bob, Mike's right hand man, said they had 6 jobs that day. They were hired to trim 6 medium to large trees on my property and I immediately got concerned as to the work quality with so much planned.
They brought a machine with a cherry picker into the side yard to trim 2 large pine trees away from the house. When they got to the pines, the machine fell over, almost on it's side, leaning against the tree. They asked my neighbor to move his 6 vehicles from his driveway so that they could drive another large truck with a boom and hook onto his property and try to get their machine up. My neighbor later complained to me that they left large ruts in his grass. It took them 4 hours to get their machine upright and working but never used it.
Meanwhile, the rest of the crew trimmed other trees in the yard using a large ladder and pole trimmer. I saw them putting away the ladder and pointed out they had only trimmed half the birch tree in the back yard. Bob came over, repeatedly addressing me as "Honey". Very annoyed, he asked what my problem was with the tree. Sincerely, I said that I was sorry he was having a bad day, but they only trimmed half the tree. Shouting at me, he said that was because they quoted me to only trim it away from the pool, and they won't do any more without charging me. We argued until I pulled the written quote from my pocket and showed that it said nothing about the pool. He finished trimming it himself, making his aggravation known with every clip. From there we argued about the pine trees because they were not able to use their machine to get the high branches away from the house as promised. He angrily complained that Mike tells people they can do these things, then they get there and there's roots and hills and they can't do it. When I said I understood and suggested that he take some money off instead, he became infuriated and stomped off with his phone. Just then, a very polite crew member asked me to look at the front where they cut back a large tree from the garage. There were still some branches overhanging the garage that I asked him to cut and he happily agreed. As there were two more branches left to cut, Mike pulled up and marched across my lawn yelling at me that they have to go, that I can't keep adding more to the job without them charging me. I said that I didn't know what he was talking about and pointed to the two branches. He immediately agreed they should come off but continued yelling at me, saying that I made them trim more from the back birch than was quoted. I again pulled out the quote and showed him that he was wrong. He continued shouting at me over the two garage branches that he already agreed should be cut. It ended with me telling him to cut the branches and GET OUT!
I have been married for 35 years and have had countless contractors to my home including other trimmers. I have never been yelled at, bullied, or accused of trying to get something that I wasn't paying for. I went into the house holding back my tears. To think that I was paying someone $1400.00 to come to my home and fight with me repeatedly over doing the job that I was paying them to do is appalling. I know that the debacle over their machine added to the bad day, but I felt from the start as I walked around the yard with them that Mike was practically counting the branches they would cut so they could quickly get to their next 5 jobs. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had with a contractor and sincerely one of the worst days I can remember.
