Stay away!!:
Randy partially completed our deck and accepted payment for the next phase then cut off communications and disappeared for over 6 weeks. Right before he quit working they nailed boards through our roof shingles which has led to water damage in the house. We have filed fraud complaints with the police and attorney general and are taking legal action to get our money back.

Really bad experience:
This is what was put into our neighborhood bulletin board so that no one else would have the same experience I had.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give you all a heads up about my recent deck building experience as I don t want anyone else to fall into the same situation in which I found myself. I picked up a business card somewhere a while back and it was titled Auburn Deck Masters. Since we had decided that we wanted a deck off our master bedroom I spoke with the owner, Randy Whitmore, and he drew up plans to put up a deck and we agreed on a price. I paid him half of the price to get the materials which is normal for a small contractor. The balance was to be paid on completion. On August 1st he brought his crew out and the deck was completed by the next day except for painting the French Doors leading out of the bedroom he had installed for us and a little interior work. I had been pleased with the finished deck and the quickness with which they worked. Since it was Friday (payday for his workers) and the weekend was coming up and all that was left to do was to paint the outside of the doors and some minor interior work I went ahead and paid him the remainder of the contract. Big mistake and I know better than that.

The guy he left to paint the doors insisted on painting even though it was raining and I had pointed out that the paint was not likely to stick to the surface well in such high humidity. He also did not tape off the window glass saying he found it easier to scrape after painting. It was a disaster! The wet paint drizzled down behind the lattice on the glass and looked horrible. This went on for a week and Randy refused to come out and look until the end of the week. The job was so botched that new expensive French Doors had to be bought as the first ones were just ruined. For the following 3 weeks Randy would not take my calls but would text me back immediately after I called. If I called him right back he would still not take my call but would text me again. That was the only way he would communicate. All in all it took him 47 days after putting up the deck to finally fix the windows and finish up the contract. Even then I had to get paint and go over spots that were missed and the dead bolt lock doesn t work. I will take care of the lock myself as God only knows when Randy would get around to it. I think the thing that bothers me the most is the sheer dismissive attitude Randy had toward me. This problem bothered us so much and has been so discouraging. Once he has my money the game was over as far as he was concerned..

I can t emphasize enough how distasteful this whole process was. We looked at ugly smeared paint on the French Doors for 47 days and it took away a great deal of our joy in having a deck where we could go out and drink coffee and put plants, etc. I take full responsibility for foolishly paying Randy the final payment before ALL of the work was completed. I m old enough to know that you can t judge someone s character by the smiley face they show you when they are trying to get money from you. My bad. I also found out after everything was done that he does not have a current license to work in Opelika. And there are other problems too. Such as he does not have a contractors license for Opelika and is working illegally in the city limits.

I just felt this is something everyone should know as Randy expressed an interest in doing other decks in our community. I ve already talked to Connor Brothers. This is your warning about this company and this person.

PS: After writing the above I have noted that paint is peeling off of the doors and they have not been touched by anyone or anything. A call to the paint store suggests that Randy did not put a primer on the windows or that he put the wrong primer on. I will now have to go buy primer and paint the doors correctly. Randy has managed to leave the gift that keeps on giving.

I think there are some other web sites asking for opinions on Auburn Deck Masters and I will go there now
