car repair inflated 1200%:
My 2005 VW Passat had a burning smell and began to smoke from the rear. The car was towed to Barry VW, where I leased it 2 years ago. The diagnosis: it needed a new turbo, costing $1700 and 4-5 days. I requested a written estimate but couldn't get one.
I had the car towed to another garage, Village Garage in Westport, for a second opinion that turned out to be shockingly different and far more simple: a plugged breather screen. The mechanic cleared the screen and replaced the air filter and the problem was solved. Total cost: $141. Total labor: one hour.
Thankfully, I didn't have to spend $1700 to get my car working again at Barry VW. Amazingly, they can say that's what it would cost. I've been a repeat customer at Barry for 6 years. After this, I won't be going back--it feels eerily like consumer fraud.
Avoid this dealership service center. If you find yourself there, by all means get a second opinion.
