Good Caregivers, Awful Business Side:
My parent moved into Woodside Terrace 5 years ago. It has been a mixed experience.
The caregiver staff is mostly very good. Some really go the extra mile. One young woman comes in and does my mom's makeup and makes her feel great. I really appreciate that.
However, dealing with the business office and their parent company can be very frustrating. If you have a problem with your bill (and I've had several), it can take a long time to get it resolved. Expect to have your emails your phone calls go unreturned for days and even weeks. Expect to have your bill be wrong even after being assured (sometimes by numerous people) that it will be corrected. Expect annual increases of 5% or more. Expect to have to pull out your lease on a regular basis to support your claim of an incorrect bill (I do this at least once a year, sometimes more). Don't expect calling Corporate to help you. Brookdale doesn't take calls from customers. They refer you to a third party, who will listen to your issue and give you a case number (apparently so their employees don't have to hear from you) and the promise that someone will contact you within 48 hours. The one time I went this route, no one from Brookdale called me back. I had to call the third party again over a week later. Good thing I could reference my case number, or I would have had to start all over again. Not exactly personal, caring service. My parent could never manage all this on her own. It makes me wonder how some of the elderly residents who don't have advocates fare.
Parking is terrible. The top people who work there carved out premium parking spots for themselves (the rest of the staff parks in the far back). Does the dining room manger really need a nice, ding-proof spot 30 feet from the side door, when the elderly visitors of the residents have a long walk from the parking lot to the entrance? Often, there is no visitor parking available at all, and there is no street parking near the facility, so I either risk parking in a red zone, or end up circling the lot a few times and leaving, not visiting my parent at all -- a waste of my time when I've driven over on my lunch hour.
Maintenance service is spotty. Sometimes a repair is made promptly. Sometimes not. We waited over a week for a refrigerator repair, and in that time, I couldn't leave perishables for my parent. There was not reduction on the rent offered.
The facility is expensive, and gets more so every year. Frankly, in this economy, the cost/value proposition is tough. Unfortunately, moving my parent would be upsetting -- they get in a routine and its hard for an elderly person to adjust to somewhere new. But given the rent and fee increase on the table for this year, I may have to do it.
I get that its a big place, and I don't complain about small lapses in assisted personal care (which you pay more for), like when they've missed brushing her teeth,or the times I've found her in the dining room without undergarments on, or the couple times she missed her meds. But the difficulty in dealing with the billing and business side of the facility, and their lack of response, is very stressful. I used to think they were just not very competent on the business side. Now, I think this is more of a corporate strategy of stonewalling, passive aggressiveness, and seeing what they can get away with.

Fabulous Senior Living Accommodations:
We moved my mother there 2 years ago, and for the price, you could never get a better accommodation. 24 front desk, heated indoor pool with classes, many many free activities, even a van that takes my mom to the Catholic church every Sunday. The food is pretty descent too and the residents have input as to the menu. I am so grateful there is a nice clean place to put Mom in close by. Some of the "senior" places are pretty low quality.

Horrible management:
Friends live there- the turn over of staff is over the top- so no consistency, the 2 faced boss abuses her staff, leads to lots of stress around the place!!
