This is one of my favorite summertime places in the city -- from movies under the Brooklyn Bridge to ecological volunteer work, it's both a beautiful setting and a relaxing space. Also: they have free public WiFi (no small matter) and are in close proximity to Grimaldi's (expect a line) and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. In warmer months, Smorgasburg (Sundays at the Tobacco Warehouse) offers gastronomic pleasures of infinite proportions with food vendors beyond your wildest imagination.
The most breathtaking park in Brooklyn hosts views of the East River, the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge. You'll see wedding parties, couples strolling, dogs, babies, old folks, young folks -- the gamut of human life comes here. Romantic, with film screenings in the summer and Narnia-like views in the winter of lampposts against a wintry endless wonderland. Ride Jane's Carousel to complete the magic experience, and then return to yummy reality with pizza at Grimaldi's or ice cream at Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.
It only took 20 years of haggling, but this truly amazing park finally opened in March 2010—or at least a small part of its eventual 85 acres, which will stretch from just north of the Brooklyn Bridge down to Atlantic Avenue. It will take years for the entire park to be completed. Most of it will be built on a series of massive piers, where ships were formerly unloaded. One of the piers (# 5)...
