Donated 4 cars to Charity Motors. Better than taking low trade-in offer from dealer.:
I disagree with the post below. I've found Charity Motors to be the best way to donate a car that otherwise is not worth much as a trade in, or for those that don't want to bother with selling direct. It's one of the only charitable programs I know of in Michigan that the IRS allows you to use the "Private Party Value" from Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds.com, versus only the actual selling price. You select which charity you want the sale proceeds to go to. I've selected the Michigan Humane Society in the past, and they've confirmed that they do in fact receive about 60% of the sale as a donation. It can take many months for the car to sell (MHS didn't receive the check from the sale of my last car donation in August 2009 until March 2010), however, with Charity Motors, you only need proof of donation, not proof of sale, to take the deduction in the year of your donation. The designated charity should mail you a letter once they receive the donation. If it takes 6 months or so, don't be alarmed. After all, most likely you're not donating a car in the best condition to start.
