I'm biased to why I took away a star..:
I love the Bellagio. I like this hotel, but I hate the fact that this hotel blocks the bellagio's sign from view. But, I was here for a Blink 182 concert, and it was really nice inside. The pool where the concert was held was drained for the nice, and it was a nice view of the strip.

Artsy and cool, even if you aren't.:
The Cosmopolitan Hotel is a nice addition to the Las Vegas strip - right next to the Bellagio, it hosts some fun, inventive restaurants (I ate at Milos, Holsteins, and China Poblano), a fair casino and slot club, some fantastic pools (shaded by the building in the afternoon) and the guest rooms are well appointed with some nice touches like actual balconies you fall from many stories (ahem) see the sights of Vegas and get fresh air. Seriously, the balconies are awesome and unusual in a town that is so paranoid about people jumping to their death or worse, wasting the precious air-conditioning. Walking around the hotel the message is clear that they really want to make you feel like they appreciate modern artists, with all sorts of video installation, sculpture, painting and photographs, plus coffee table art books in every room and on the nightstand.
The rooms are also laid out like a giant party room where you can sit on the couch while able to see the bed and the shower at the same time. If you actually want some privacy there are hidden curtains so you can take a bath without the entire living room seeing you.

Good stuff is the included wireless internet access (most hotels still charge an extra $20 per day for this). Aside from the standard Las Vegas taxes, the room rate quoted is what you'll pay, but you still need to pay extra to use the gym.

The building property, relative to the other recent Vegas hotels built in the last decade, is actually quite modest in footprint which makes it a lot easier to navigate. You won't feel like you're walking a city block to get to your car from your room.

They really hype the Identity slot club program, which is supposed to let you earn points for both gambling as well as eating at their restaurants or staying at the hotel, but the website seems to have a problem showing the actual balance so who knows how well this actually works. The in-room TV/computers were also really buggy when I was there, so it appears whoever is running the IT in the place needs to really get organized.

Thankfully the reservation system seems to work well.
