Craig General Hospital is located on a piece of the homestead of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Friend, who donated the land in the early 1960s. Funds for construction came from a federal Hill-Burton grant of $245,000 and a Craig County bond issue of $250,000. At its opening in 1963, Craig General Hospital operated with 32 beds and 70 employees, contributing a $149,647 annual payroll to the community....
