I got hosed:
This job was too much for them and they hosed me
Take That U. 1 Empire Auto
My 4 yr old vehicle (47,000mi) needed an oil change so I stopped in and they were able to do it while I waited. Didn't take long and the price was fair. Four days later as I pulled into my driveway I noticed a smell of burnt oil. I thought, "they must have spilled a little when filling it". Then I noticed a trickle of fluid spots on the road leading into my driveway. I looked under my car and the oil was quickly creating a puddle in my driveway. Furious, I called them and expressed my concern with their work. They told me to bring it in ASAP. I immediately drove it there and upon inspection they told me that it was the rear main seal that had blown. My first mistake was not realizing that my vehicle had a drivetrain warranty that was 5yr/60,000 mi. The dealer would have fixed it for free. My first complaint now is that EMPIRE didn't tell me that my car was in warranty. Their excuse, "all cars have all different warranties and how should we know?" Maybe so, but my thought on that is this, "If all you do is repair cars and you've been doing it for fifteen years, how could you not know??? Enough on that. They explained my options: "The dealer will charge you 175/hr for labor, we charge 80/hr and we do these repairs all the time" I said go for it, for $900.00. It took 8 hours longer for them to do the work than they said it would, which concerned me but we were already too far to stop. They also said that my valve cover gaskets were "seeping" and about to fail so they replaced them for free, since they had the thing apart already. OK GREAT!!! THANKS!! What good guys these guys are. They are hooking me up! Everything I read online is true! Here's another failure on my part: They did not note any of the FREE work on my invoice. I should have made them state it. Now that something has gone wrong, I can not prove they did it because the invoice doesn't state it. This is what happened: Seven months after they did their work my car blew a hose. The dealer stated that a Heater Hose with inferior clamps was used for a connection that required a more rigid hose with different clamps. I have spoken to EMPIRE and they deny any wrongdoing because the invoice does not state that they replaced anything other than a rear main seal. I have thought about small claims court but the burden of proof is on me. Failing to note "FREE" work on an invoice allows them to deny it later. Lucky for me, my car still runs, does not smoke (yet) and only has noisy valves at cold starts. I trusted them and although I cannot PROVE they did something wrong, I believe they did. A good education comes at a price!
