Description

Ess-a-Bagel was established in 1976 on 1st Avenue in the Gramercy section of Manhattan by Florence and Gene Wilpon and Florence's brother Aaron Wenzelberg. Coming from an Austrian baking family, it is not surprising that within two years our hand-rolled bagels were voted the best in the Tri-State area. We have continued to win national acclaim, not only for our bagels, but also for our luscious...

Ess-A-Bagel Restaurant Review:
Ess-A-Bagel makes a memorable bagel: kosher, low in salt and preservative- and sugar-free. Only once in a while we get one that isn't quite baked through. The bagels are huge and a wide selection is available, as are a variety of cream cheeses including raisin walnut, blueberry and jalapeño. Ess-A-Bagel makes bagel sandwiches galore. Also located at 831 Third Ave., 212-980-1010.

Some traditionalists consider Ess-a-Bagel’s namesake product unnecessarily big and chewy. Tell that to the lines of faithful customers waiting for steaming hot bagels! When it comes to size, Ess-A-Bagel’s are the best of the biggest: plump, chewy, and oh-so satisfying.
