Wanna dead pet? Bring it here!:
On Monday 10/29/07, I took my perfectly healthy 7 year old mini Dachshund Diego into the Fort Wayne Pet Hospital to have a routine teethcleaning. The procedure was performed by Dr. Marcus Martin. My dog has had his teeth cleaned here every year for the last 5-6 years. Most vets offer blood tests to insure that your animal is healthy enough to be put under anesthesia. I always elect to have the most comprehensive test done, as I did this year. Dr. Martin told me that Diego would be finished around 2:00pm and would be available for pickup after 3. I wasn't able to get there until 5:00. In the 20 minutes that I waited in the lobby, there were about 30 people with appointments, picking up and dropping off animals. I have never seen the place so busy. When the vet technician finally brought Diego to me, he was very cold, his breathing was very labored and he was so out of it that he was virtually unresponsive. She gave me the results of his blood tests, which said that Diego was perfectly healthy. Diego was released to me without Dr. Martin checking on his currect condition. I took him to my father's house. My dad took one look and him and said that he didn't look right. I called the vet's office 2 times and it went to their answering machine. I called a third time and the vet technician told me to give him an antibiotic. I told her that there was no way that he could swallow it because he was so out of it. She told me she was going to talk to Dr. Martin and to call back in 5 minutes. I called back and she said to bring Diego back in. On the way there, Diego stopped breathing. I tried giving him CPR, to no avail. When we got to the vet, they worked on him for about 30 minutes, again to no avail. Dr. Martin says that at 3:00 when he checked on Diego, he was walking around. I challenge that because 2 hours later, he was still so drugged up that he could barely lift his head, much less walk. It is my contention that once the teeth cleaning procedure was finished, Dr. Martin failed to check on Diego's progress. I feel that had Dr. Martin seen the physical stress that Diego was in at the time he claimed to check on him, he would have been able to take the steps necessary to save his life. Instead, the vet tech released him to my care when he was obviously in dire straits, resulting in his death. I am not a licensed veterinarian and didn't know any better; I entrusted the Fort Wayne Pet Hospital with the treatment and care of my healthy dog, and this resulted in a dead dog.
