OK! I usually don't give places bad reviews BUT this place deserves it. I had such a bad experience. I went in there yesterday to inquire about their wedding cakes. A friend of mine used them and was quite pleased. I had read all the reviews here and thought that HEY - Gallis's Sanitary Bakery ...despite the strange name sounds like a good place -- i was absolutely wrong!

When I went in I immediately mentioned that the bakery had been recommended to me and that I'd like to speak to someone about wedding cakes. The counter girl immediately went into the back and a woman came out. The woman informed me that they no longer are making wedding cakes since they have had some problems with the help. Ok - sounds fine --tho weird for a place that claims on both their www site and on their business cards that they "specialize" in Birthday and wedding cakes. The woman mentioned that she'd would give me her son's phone number and that I could talk to him about the cake and see if they'd be making them again by July. However, she immediately followed it by a question -- where is your wedding going to me??? I told her that I'd be having it in Menlo Park. She immediately told me that they don't go down to Menlo Park (less than a 30 minute drive) and that she didn't want to waste their time or mine discussing it further. My mom asked her if she could recommend another bakery in our area -- to with the woman replied you are going to just have to look around. WOW !!! First - off she complained about the help (oh a big "no no" in business). Second, she told me that they don't do wedding cakes despite the fact that they claim their business is built on them. I can understand that a bakery doesn't want to deliver a cake "for free" to my area BUT declining absolutely is just strange. I was totally prepared to pay for a delivery charge. Lastly, the baked goods I bought were just average --- nothing remarkable. I bought the foccacia, 1 pineapple upside down cake and 2 canollis...

The bakery has been in the family since it was founded in 1909 by Ambrose Galli and fellow baker and Italian immigrant Rafael Valente. The current bakers/operators are descendants Ambrose Galli Jr. and son, Todd Galli.
From recipes passed down through generations, the bakery retains a strong Italian identity, offering everything from breads to cookies, tarts and special occasion cakes. A cake...
