Tips

Know Before You Go:
Even though there's no special menu for kids, there are great selections like sliders, mac-and-cheese and sweet potato fries--not to mention the hand-scooped shakes and malts.

What to Drink:
The full bar in back is a destination unto itself, stocking classic bourbons and Southern cocktails like the mint julep and a traditional hurricane. The wine list offers fairly standard Californian selections.

Editorial Reviews

"Cholesterol and calories be damned" say 'cueheads of this "friendly" South Pasadena joint, a mainstay since 1946 for "solid" BBQ staples such as pulled pork and beer-braised brisket, along with "rich sauces"; the "spiffy" nostalgic-meets-modern space makes for a "lively", family-oriented atmosphere, and while rib-sticklers sniff "it's not Texas or Memphis", with such moderate prices, "it'll do."

Gus's Barbecue Restaurant Review:
Gus's Barbecue features retro touches like a tin ceiling, but the feel is decidedly modern, with soft lighting and dark wood details in the rear dining room. In a nod to the establishment's history, vintage black-and-white photos of South Pasadena line the walls, while a chalk mural of a blues musician looks down on diners seated in stylish red booths. Start off with appetizers like shredded...

Gus’s neon sign was always famous; closed and reopened, now maybe famous for food. Start with drinks, end with red velvet cake. In between, it’s meat. Memphis, St. Louis, Texas, Carolina style. Or pure California classic burger. On brioche. Big red booths set the scene for feasting and passing out. Check out weekend outdoor cookouts in the parking lots.

Information from the business

Our family style eatery has an interesting history that began back in 1946 when relatives Gus, Jack, and Mike immigrated from Greece and opened the restaurant with a dedication to serve the community by preparing quality dishes using old world recipes. Back then one could find Gus or Mike in the kitchen tasting and testing, ensuring freshness, or out front seating customers while managing the...
