pretty good park and atmosphere:
i was in l.a. for a few days recently and i took the opportunity to go to four baseball games while i was there: the angels, the lancaster jethawks, the rancho cucamonga quakes, and the inland empire 66ers. this is the home of the 66ers and is the best of the three minor league parks i went to while i was there.

rancho cucamonga, lancaster and san bernardino all have similar ballpark designs: concourse out of view of the field, a small walkway in back of the box seats, and "club" seats and suites behind the walkway in the infield. in all three ballparks, the box seats went most of the way down the line, although in rancho cucamonga they had a cafe down the third-base line and something called the "Fault Zone" down the first-base line.

so if they were so similar, what made one ballpark stand out? more than anything else, it was the atmosphere. at the epicenter in rancho cucamonga, which has gotten more praise than san bernardino or lancaster, no one pays a whole lot of attention to the action on the field. the quakes won 10-1 and hit multiple home runs in the game and it still felt dead. in lancaster, the fans were into the game more than in rancho cucamonga, and one of them had a sense of humor. when a foul ball went over the roof and out of the ballpark and the p.a. system played the familiar breaking-glass noise, he said: "That was just your bus. It's a long walk back to San Jose." (The Jethawks were playing the san jose giants.) but in inland empire, not only were the fans into the game, everyone seemed to know each other. they were there with a friend or they saw somebody they knew at the ballpark and had a conversation with them. this is ironic because san bernardino is the biggest of the three minor league cities i visited.

the second thing that separated the ballparks was concessions. i can't speak for all of the concessions because i didn't eat that much, but the pizza was fresh out of the oven, made to order. i had to wait a little longer for it, but the end result was better.

another thing was the mascot, bernie, who was more into the game and funny than any mascot i have ever seen. he would stand on a dugout and bang on a cowbell and the fans would clap whatever pattern he played. a couple of times, he dropped the cowbell into the dugout, which was pretty funny. he did look like a dork, but i guess you can't have everything.

all in all, a pretty good ballpark experience, although i wish it had an open concourse. of the three california league ballparks i saw, i definitely would rate this one as the best.
