This ornate tribute to Victorian decorating was built in 1864 as the summer home of LeGrand Lockwood. It remains one the oldest (and finest) surviving Second Empire–style country homes in the United States; it's hard not to be impressed by its octagonal skylighted rotunda and more than 50 rooms of gilt, frescoes, marble, intricate woodwork, and etched glass.

The 62-room Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is "one of the earliest and finest surviving Second Empire-style country houses ever built in the United States." This National Historic Landmark serves as a valuable resource of 19th-century American history. Tours of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum are available hourly, Wednesday through Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
