My new shop!!!!:
I was so tired of the run around and the expense of taking my car to the dealership, but upon speaking with a sales guy at the dealership (I won't say which one :-), I promised), he actually told me to see Mark because I could get the same quality workmanship, original parts, for about half the price he was quoting me. Needless to say I was shocked but pleasantly surprised about this man's recommendation and I definitely needed to find out more about this repair shop. I got my Volvo XC 90 repaired for less than ½ of what the dealership wanted and another “import specialty” shop wanted. The other 2 shops were charging to replace two control arms, when only one needed replacing. I also got an oil change and tire rotation on top of the repair and it was still CHEAPER than the other guy’s quotes. I have worked in the customer service industry for years, so my radar is finely tuned for good customer service. Mark and his crew go above and beyond, they go that extra mile to ensure the customer is happy and that the repairs they perform is top notch quality. The employees at Mark’s are hard working and they truly care about you, the customer. I recommend you give these guys a try, he has several locations and I have heard lots of good things about all of them. Never again will I pay dealership prices!

You're taking a risk with these guys:
Mark's Japanese has 4 locations now (plus a transmission business). I've been to the Redmond and Kirkland locations with my vehicles. Mark's direct mail has a very genuine "I'm on your side" message, proclaiming "No Lattes, No Marble Floors, No Flat Screens", so I assumed I'd save money and get good quality and service.

Redmond - The manager was nice, helpful, casual and believable. They did a tune up on my Honda, and the price was about what I'd pay at a dealer, so no cost savings, but I continued as I wanted to test them to see if they'd try to sell me more and to see how good their service was. Overall, good experience, until I left. Immediately, my car started running rough. I let it go a couple months and then took it to the GoodYear in Woodinville. The fuel injection intake needed to be cleaned, which is a simple process done with a spray cleaner and costs about $100. I would have expected this to be identified during a tune-up process.

Kirkland - After that, I decided to give them another chance with our SUV, so I went to Kirkland, where the manager is Mark (not the owner). Mark is good on the phone and quite convincing that he'll only do what's necessary, he's on your side and you'll save all kinds of money. Mark is a bit sloppy in person, and in my opinion, quite slimy. We had spark plugs changed and a few other things. We agreed on the cost, I left, he called with a few other services he recommended (which weren't necessary), and I declined them. When I picked up the car, he did some fuzzy math by adding in shop materials and some other miscellaneous costs that brought the total to about $150 more than agreed, and higher than what I was quoted at Kirkland Toyota. He continued to try and show me how I was saving money, and I cornered him with the first question, which was "this doesn't add up to what we agreed to". He didn't have a good response, and had a hard time making eye contact. Essentially he said that even though changing plugs took 20 minutes they still charge by the book, which is much longer. I'm only interested in what I was quoted. This was weak, and more representative of what I'd expect from a dealer. I assume they actually did the work, but would have felt better going to the dealer if I was going to pay the same price.

Summary: Probably not bad quality, likely a place of integrity, pricing is not likely any better than another shop, including dealers, and I would not go back to the Kirkland shop. As for me, I won't go back to Mark's as there are higher quality and lower cost shops that don't try and mislead with their advertising (which I believe Mark's does). As well, I'm unclear how to contact Mark directly as each store has an email alias that the managers oversee, and that's what's posted on BBB as well. So Mark, give us a way to give you feedback directly and we'll do it.
