Minetta Storage - thieves and liars (IMHO):
The following describes a truly horrible and frightening customer experience with a company. I have tried to make sure this is posted in the correct location. If I am mistaken, please remove my comments, e-mail me and let me know. My situation may be the ONLY situation where anything like this happened. I’m SURE that they eagerly help and assist everyone else with courtesy and respect.

Saturday November 19, 2011, while riding my motorcycle, I was involved in an accident. My motorcycle was damaged, and as I was taken to receive medical attention my motorcycle was towed to a storage lot.

My son had to track down the motorcycle himself. We received no notification from the storage lot. Early Monday morning my son called the police, using the incident report to determine where the motorcycle had been taken. It had been towed by Cobra Towing to a storage lot at 14635 Minetta St. called Minetta Auto Storage.

My son’s attempt to recover the motorcycle from Minetta Auto Storage was met with lies, intimidation, ridicule, stalling techniques and even extortion with the specific goal of STEALING my motorcycle.

Monday, December 21st: My son called the storage lot and identified the vehicle. He described the accident and said he wanted to come see and pick up the motorcycle. The conversation went like this:

Rhonda: “It looks totaled, it isn’t rolling and the back tire is flat. Don’t bother coming to pick it up.”
My son: “No, I’m coming to pick it up. What do I need to bring?”
Rhonda: “Don’t bother coming unless your father is with you.”
My son: “Well, I told you, he’s in the hospital I’m his son, how do I pick up his motorcycle!”
Rhonda: “Well, if your name isn’t on the insurance, you can’t, maybe he can hobble on down here to pick it up (laughter on the line).”

Tuesday, November 22nd: My son came to the hospital and asked me to call and solve the problem. Certainly I could, since I was the owner and insured driver who was operating the motorcycle when the accident occurred, right? I was also told it was totaled and not to bother coming up to get it. Well, since only an insurance company claim adjuster can make that determination, I was reluctant to accept it from a simple storage lot clerk. She continued to insist it was ‘totaled’ and that I didn’t need to even come get it or see it, they would handle it. She said that if his name isn’t on the insurance, my son couldn’t see it or retrieve it. When asked if my insurance company could just fax a copy of my insurance to them she insisted not once or twice but three times that they did NOT have a fax machine at Minetta Auto Storage so no, we can’t help you.

Wednesday, November 23nd: My son called the storage lot, said he had the insurance document and said he was coming to pick up the motorcycle where we received the same “It’s totaled, why are you wasting time coming to get it?” He insisted, and was told the charges would be $225 if picked up today, and $15/day would be added for every additional day. I arranged for a friend to accompany my son to the lot and the two went to the lot. My son said he wanted to see the motorcycle before he paid the fee but she told him that it was illegal for them to enter the lot. They waited about 10 to 15 minutes then she changed the story to “It’s against the rules for your friend to enter the lot. Only you are allowed in, but you have to pay first. Oh, also it’s $275, not $240 (225+15). Ok, my math isn’t great, but that’s called ‘making stuff up’.

My son entered the lot that forbids unauthorized people on the lot only to discover entire families roaming the lot looking at vehicles while other random individuals (40+) were walking around (apparently examining the merchandise). While he was examining the motorcycle he was approached (no ‘bum-rushed’ is the correct term) by people literally pushing each other out of the way, holding out business cards offering him up to $1,500 on the spot to buy the motorcycle. I think the clerk thought if we could be convinced the vehicle was 'totaled' or that retrieving it was too much trouble, we would abandon it...then she could sell it, pocketing the money herslef.

My son returned to the clerk and said “Ok, I’ve paid the fee and seen the motorcycle, I’m ready to take it with me.” Rhonda said “No, you can’t. You need to have a tow truck driver get it for you. Our employees are prohibited from assisting you. You need to find your own tow truck driver.” There were five wrecker drivers (Cobra Towing) in the immediate area and Rhonda walked deliberately to each one and had a word with them. The friend that accompanied my son overheard her tell one driver “Do NOT help him, even if he offers you money.” At that time, Brendan did not know what she had told them, and he approached each diver and asked for assistance and was refused. One driver even said to my son “She told me not to help you.”

This impasse caused my son to offer to personally and physically drag the motorcycle to our trailer parked at the lot entrance (all of 10 feet) and was again told “No.”

After a few tense minutes, a manager came out of the gate and asked son if he had a problem. My son said “YES , I paid the fee for my motorcycle, she won’t let me take it out of the lot and your wrecker drivers won’t help me.” To which the manager said “Give me $30 and I’ll get one of my fork lift drivers to lift it.” My son gave him the money (which disappeared into a pocket and for which he was not offered a receipt) and the man directed a fork lift driver to carry the motorcycle to the trailer where my son and friend unloaded it onto the trailer.

The truth is that the motorcycle was NOT totaled and the rear tire was not damaged. There was only damage to the front fork (bent 30 deg), front tire, fender and radiator. My replacement parts have totaled $150 and one day of work.

Minetta Auto Storage Lot perpetuates a culture of dishonesty, greed, intimidation, ridicule, theft, lies, deceit and extortion. They tried every trick to force my son to abandon my motorcycle. We paid $50 notification fee for a notification that was not provided. The staff lied to us regarding the condition of my vehicle to discourage us from coming to look at it. They lied about not having a fax machine. They lied repeatedly to my son, thinking that they could intimidate him into abandoning the vehicle so they could sell it.

Minetta Auto Storage Lot used lies, deceit, intimidation and ridicule to try to steal my motorcycle. When we persisted, they resorted to extortion. If you wish detailed documentation of their behavior, please email me
