Exploitation on those who lack technical knowledge:
Mobile PC Doctor in South Dennis, MA represents the MOST blatant exploitation I have ever seen from a “legitimate” computer service company. This company made MANY house calls to an elderly couple, ages 80 and 84, to service a BRAND NEW Dell Inspiron 660. I will preface by saying after a single use, I believe the hard drive is faulty and we will likely have the unit replaced by Dell this week. Mobile PC sent out a technician to service this computer 5 times for a unit less than one year of age. They charge $120.00/hour for their house calls, and one of these calls was even a two hour ($240.00) visit. When looking over the invoices, the only troubleshooting it appears that they actually list is malware clean-up, anti-virus scans, registry error clean-up, tracking cookie removal, etc. All of these tasks could have been easily completed with a single click of a program already installed on the customer’s computer on the date of purchase. In one invoice, they claim to have recovered images and documents; However, the user advised me that there are still family photos and documents missing. The speed and security problems are not fixed, the computer (which is still under its 1-year warranty) is still not performing normally. When I sat down to remedy some of the issues (and let me add that I am not a computer technician by any means), I performed two complete anti-virus scans, a registry error clean-up, installed a pop-up blocker, recovered one file of family photos, and enabled the data backup feature which was already available on the unit, as well as several security features which had been previously disabled. This was within one week of Mobile PC Doctor’s most recent $120.00 visit and I was there 50 minutes. The only evidence that anyone other than myself had ever serviced the computer was a program named “CCleaner” which had been installed. This program is available free online, takes a few minutes to install, and the owners did not know what it was or how to use it. Moreover, they had a pre-existing, purchased registry cleaning program which had been disabled in favor of this free one (which was not set to function automatically).
When I called Mobile PC Doctor for an explanation of what these service visits entailed, a snarky employee tried to filibuster the phone call much the same way I expect they speak to the elderly computer owners. She tried to explain the simplest of service actions with incredible detail to sound as though a great deal had been done. After she agreed that what their technician had accomplished could not take one (let alone two) hours to complete, she justified their actions by advising additional time is used to answer questions and explain issues. However as I previously stated, the users are no more educated on how to use their computer, remedy their own issues, or operate the singular beneficial program installed by Mobile PC Doctor. At no point did they suggest the users contact Dell about servicing the computer while under warranty. They have charged this couple over $600.00 to service a computer less than one year old that is used only to check email, store treasured family photos and play MSN games. The sole representative who I’ve spoken with was defensive from the very outset of our conversation, likely realizing that there is a very common sense issue that everyday computer users and average technology consumers would notice in the pattern of the service offered. She explained that they only performed these services because the owners requested it, and yet have no justification for their failure solve any of the issues, create last solutions or offer advice on alternative solutions or independent management of the issues.
I am only using examples from a newer computer, as I never used the old computer and cannot speak to the nature of issues it had. I will add that they visited at least as many times for that unit however, and had no problem including in the invoice to the owners that it was “almost time for a new computer”. Again, they never suggested the couple contact Dell about this computer they first looked at when only months old. This couple has paid this company over $1000.00 EASILY (and that I have a record of) between this and the earlier computer. For those keeping track, that is 2.5 NEW Dell Inspiron 660s, and I’m staying safe on my estimates. I should have recognized immediately when the employee said “we don’t make a habit of exploiting customers” that something was incredibly foul, but allowing them a chance to explain made no difference whatsoever.
ANYONE who is considering using this place, PLEASE STAY CLEAR of Mobile PC Doctor. They criminally exploit those who don’t have the technical background to realize they are being taken advantage of. I am lodging a complaint with the BBB and attempting to notify a local news organization to out this scheme for what it is. Protect your computer, your money and your loved ones who are not technically savvy from this abusive, negligent and criminal puppet show.
