The Extras: Under a new chef in recent years, the Modern Cafe has evolved to offer customers seasonal menus inspired by local and sustainable ingredients.

Parking: Parking can get hectic on weekends, especially with the all of the new shops and bars in the neighborhood. A parking lot across the street is generally open, but be sure to observe all of the posted signs. Some parking is only good for 15 minutes.

We like this northeast neighborhood gem located in a building that dates back to 1941, and so does the local arts crowd. When owner Jim Grell took it over, he matched its vintage retro look to his menu---and his pot roast (decidedly the best in town) remains renowned among Twin Cities foodies. But we think the pan-roasted chicken always is prepared to a juicy turn and the homemade onion soup...

With cool 1940's decor, the Modern Cafe looks anything but "modern". A younger, hip crowd flocks here for the New England-style pot roast, pan-roasted chicken breasts with garlic mashed potatoes, black bean soup with chopped jalapeno or fried catfish with "polenta".
