Never again.:
We hired New Century Builders, Inc. to renovate our child care center bathrooms. This included 3 classroom baths, 6 vanities and 2 main baths. We never once received documentation for anything that was being completed. We were only given emails or direct communication with the President, Beth Scebbi, of the company. Even upon asking for documentation, such as receipts or a contract, we would continue to receive emails or phone/in person conversations. We were also never aware that everyone that came to work on our renovations were subcontracted! We never knew who was coming in that day to work, and what was even being done! We never received documentation; including permits, licenses, or even names of the companies that were being subcontracted. A work schedule was never submitted, which the President did state that she would send this.
From the moment they were hired, communication was terrible. The start date kept getting changed, and once the demolition was done (August 2015), everything began to fall apart. After demolition was completed, the work began. Our first tile subcontractor began the work on the classroom and main bathroom tiling. He stated that he had never worked for this company and was told that he needed to complete the job as fast as he could. Due to this, the tile work was horrendous! The grout lines are very thick, grout is crumbling around the door frames, tile baseboard trim is uneven, tiles were cracked (we pointed them out!) and new tile did not replace old tile at baseboard. Again, the tile looks absolutely awful!!! Beth continued to tell us that this is how commercial tiling was completed, even though we were always questioning the look of it.
The tile subcontractor was to come in on a Saturday to fix the work that was done, and since we are not open that day, someone came to open the building for him. He never showed up and continued to ignore all phone calls. Beth stated that she would have another tile subcontractor out the following week to fix the problem areas. This tile subcontractor stated that he would have never completed a job like this and that our concerns were valid. He said the only way to fix this would be to start over.
Although the tile was one of our biggest issues, we did have other issues arise. The paint is chipping in the bathrooms, and we do know that the walls were not treated before painting began; sanding, filling in holes, etc. The tile backsplash on our classroom sinks are already starting to come off the wall. Caulking around the sink is poor, and Beth needed to add caulk two times to seal them better. The cabinets began to warp due to water coming down the cabinet. Yes, we understand that there can be water sitting due to children using the sinks, but this was never a problem with the cabinets that we had for over 40 years before this renovation. The faucets in the classrooms are too large for the sink basin, so a part of the faucet overhangs. We asked Beth if this would be a problem and she said it would not. We’ve had a lot of leaks in the cabinets, and come to find out that when washing your hands, if water comes up to that part of the faucet that overhangs, water seeps down into the cabinets! This is not only a problem for under the sink, but can be an electrical issue due to an electrical box under the cabinet for the hands free faucets!
We were given an end date of early September 2015, which things were not “completed” until October 2015. We would never recommend this company due to the issues we have to this day! Nothing is complete, and we are completely unsatisfied with the work that was done. They did the absolute bare minimum, and it shows. We were always called a “small job” and felt that other jobs were more important than ours. Although it may be “small” to them, it was a big project for us and at this point, we wish we never renovated our 40+ years existing bathrooms!
