Butcher Block Fried Clams:
Westfield’s North Elm Butcher Block - Whole Belly Clams
Today (4/5/13) I went to the Butcher Block and got the Whole Belly clams for lunch. Their Ads claim that they are only available Fridays from 11-4, but I saw the sign out yesterday (Thursday) so maybe more often if you ask. For 10.99 + tax I got about 10 clams, Cole slaw, fries and a tartar sauce. The clams were very good but I would have been happier with 15. If it works out to more than a dollar a clam, not so good but a little less – OK. The French fries were plentiful and quite tasty. The Cole slaw wasn’t so good. I like mayonnaise in the slaw and they didn’t seem to put any in theirs.
However, there aren’t many places that will make this dish for you at any price. I can think of Bernie’s in Chicopee that does it for about the same price, and you get a few more clams and the Cole slaw is a little better, but the fries are not nearly as good. However, Bernie’s offers it all week long. I think Schermerhorn’s in Holyoke does this also, but I haven’t tried it there because their price is way too high. Schermerhorn’s is a good place to buy raw scallops because they usually have the best price around.
