My father, Wayman H. Parks, was a pipe-fitter in Newport new shipyard for 11 to 12 years. He worked two eight hour shifts until the union came to the shipyard, bringing a large strike around 1967-68. The second shift was no longer not available for him, so he took a second job working at Wilson H. Wright Plumbing and Heating Service Company in Hampton, Virginia.
