I'm an Indian-food snob. I grew up eating home-cooked South Indian food and as the vast majority of Indian restaurants are actually North Indian food, I'm always disapointed by the bland flavors and un-inspired dishes. I've been going to Paru's since I was a kid, though and in spite of the not-great area of Sunset that it's on, the food, service and atmosphere is why this place has been around for decades. Fresh dosas to order, uppamma (my favorite) and a mulligatawny soup that is almost like the rasam my grandmother makes from scratch.

This little gem is hidden (literally) on an unassuming stretch of Sunset Boulevard. You ring a doorbell and the gate will open to a small, overgrown garden and cozy dining room decorated with vibrant Indian fabrics and pictures of various saints and gurus.
