Do not go to Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone, OR!:
I have a 2008 Dodge Charger with 32,500 miles on it. The wireless control module which is a computer chip that communicates with the key to start the car started to malfunction in our car preventing us from starting the car. AAA was able to get the car started and I drove it to Firestone – they did some diagnosis and determined it was the WCM and said they didn’t have the equipment to fix it and suggested I drive it to the dealership.
So I took the car to Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone, Oregon. We arrived right as the service department was closing and Bill the Service Manager checked us in. I explained the problem and Bill basically insinuated my wife and I think we know what the problem is and we’re wrong, but he has a good idea what the problem is and it’s not what we think. I think because we’re younger he automatically assumed we are idiots.
We decided to leave the car at the dealership since it wouldn’t start. If we wanted them to work on it after we agreed on a price, it would already be there. To begin, we wanted to know the price to have the wireless control module replaced. Bill said someone would call us the next day with a quote. Since I work and cannot answer the phone easily so I asked the dealership to call my wife with a quote.
Eric Cross, the Service Advisor called and quoted my wife the next day and quoted us $997 to have the module replaced with 2 new keys and labor. On my lunch break I called my wife and she delivered the bad news. I thought the price sounded high so I asked my wife to call to call other Dodge dealerships in the area to get a second opinion. I separately did some research online and found the part a fraction of what Ron Tonkin Dodge was charging us- even with labor. It appeared the price quoted by Eric Gladstone was grossly inflated.
When I called Eric back to get clarification on the pricing he didn’t seem to understand why I was calling – and only wanted a “yes” or “no” to proceed with the work on the car. He rudely told me he already explained everything to my wife – which only further cemented my lack of trust in Eric and Ron Tonkin Dodge. He re-explained everything to me and I brought to his attention that I had found the part online for less and that I found another dealership across town in Vancouver that could do it for less. Eric was unwilling to budge on the price and could care less if he had our business or not. He just wanted a “yes” or “no” to proceed with the work on the car.
I told him I would call him back – I wanted to discuss our options with my wife and call the other dealership back. After confirming the price that the dealership in Vancouver gave us, my wife and I decided that Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone was taking advantage of us and would go to Vancouver instead. I called Eric back at Ron Tonkin Dodge and he said his Service Manager called the Vancouver dealership and the price the Vancouver dealership were quoting was even higher than what Tonkin was asking. This is hilarious because I spoke with the service manager at the Vancouver dealership myself and received the same quote my wife did which was almost half of what Eric at Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone had quoted us for service.
Basically Eric and Ron Tonkin Dodge expected us to roll over and just pay them $1,000 without any questions or negotiations. When I started asking questions and put them on the spot for their outrageous prices they decided they were going to treat us like we were incompetent. I’m not going to blindly trust a car dealership when I have misgivings about their employees and how they do business – especially when there is such a huge discrepancy in pricing.
When I went back to Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone to get my car Eric was on the phone with another client and made a rude remark to that customer too. There was also a tow truck outside towing another truck from the dealership. My wife said she overheard another person on the phone talking to someone with the same problem we were having with the WCM.
All said and done Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone tried charging me $105 to “diagnose” my car. I simply wanted an estimate for the replacement of the WCM. I told them when I dropped it off that I already had the car diagnosed – I had the code printout from Firestone. After 20 minutes of complaining I finally negotiated paying them half so we could part ways amicably.
I will never go back.
Their employees were not compassionate or understanding. They were rude. They were untrustworthy and overpriced. Also, the size of their “Service” Department was the size of my living room – you can tell the focus at Ron Tonkin Dodge in Gladstone is selling new cars, not maintaining your car purchase. Toyota of Gladstone across the street has a huge waiting room and a huge service department – not only do they take pride in selling cars but also taking care of existing ones. If you’re in the market for a new or used car, maybe you should go there instead.
