I have been going to Sal’s Bit of Italy for 22 years but I will never go back after this last experience that took place on my wife’s birthday. We used a Restaurant.com coupon that gives you a $25 credit and we presented it to the owner when we placed our order as instructed on the certificate. We wanted to order 2 pizzas but he said that they were out of dough. The only reason to go to this place is for their deep dish pizza. He said that he would see what he could do but we should order the large appetizer plate that the four of us could share or we could get a salad or pasta dishes. He was clearly trying to steer us to the items that he had a higher profit margin to work with.

He came back and said he had dough for one pizza so I got the large with chicken, meatball & garlic for $16.95. I said we will start with that and look over the menu. He returned a few minutes later and asked what else we would like and that we were at $24.95 and needed to order $15 more worth of food. I said that the menu said it was $16.95 but he said that chicken counts as 3 toppings. I said it did not say that on the menu but he insisted that it was. I said to forget it and that we would choose another topping. He said it was too late, it was in the oven. I would have walked out at this point but it was her birthday and I did not want to ruin it for her. After I complained, he said he would make it $22.95.

We ordered the rest of our food and when we were finished, he asked if we wanted another pizza. We all looked at each other in disbelief since he lied and said he was out of dough but now that we were going to pay full price, the dough magically appeared. We said no and he gave us the bill. He clearly wrote $22.95 on the bill but changed it to $24.95 at the last minute.

The only thing I could do was not leave a tip so we paid using a credit card and left. The next day I checked my card total and he added a $7.50 tip for himself.

We will never go back and my son and his girlfriend will never go back. My son has been a more frequent customer than we are because he lives much closer than we do. I hope that the $8.00 for 1/3rd of a chicken breast and the tip was worth losing future business from all of us.

When I called him to talk about the tip on my visa and overcharging us what was listed on the menu, he hung up on me.

Was the extra $15 worth losing 4 repeat customers? Anyone with an ounce of business sense would say “no”.

This family owned-and-operated eatery is a tiny place where the authentic cuisine (ancestral recipes direct from Southern Italy) contradict the decor (plastic grapes, hanging empty wine bottles and autographed photos of Mohammed Ali). During the day, the window-walled, dim main room bustles with the constant action of customers picking up takeout orders. At night, the place is somewhat of a...
