Their negligence killed my dog:
Our healthy dog suffered life-ending injuries after being spayed by Dr. Savard at Squaw Peak Animal Hospital. We got a call after surgery saying she was fine. Thirty minutes later came another call. This one telling us she had died for 15 minutes, but was revived.
Prognosis was unknown, but they pumped her full of drugs and sent her home. No discharge instructions, no emergency contact information, just a name of a clinic (no phone number or address). A few hours later, the drugs wore off and she was worse: she was yowling, paddling her legs, and wetting herself. We took her to an emergency clinic where she was treated for two days before we put her down. She was blind and paralyzed and would never be the same. (We had her examined post-mortem and she was perfectly healthy.)
It took Dr. Savard three days to call us to check on her condition. During that time, we tried obtaining her records and were met with delay after delay. About two weeks later, we did speak with Dr. Savard whose best response was, "These things happen."
We finally got the records and filed a complaint with the Arizona Veterinary Medical Exam Board and they launched a full investigation. Dr. Savard and the clinic itself were found to be in violation of *several* laws, most notably those involving post-operative monitoring. The clinic was put on watch (expired meds were found, among other discoveries) and Dr. Savard was put on probation, fined, and required to take additional training. See the full report here:
I was a loyal patient of this clinic. My dogs were seen by Dr. Weaver since 1995. Ever since he retired, that place has gone downhill. I have since switched to Blue Cross Veterinary Clinic on Indian School and have been very happy with the care they have given my dogs.
