Steppenwolf Theatre Co

The Steppenwolf ensemble dates back to the 1970s, when groups began performing in the basement of a church in Highland Park. The actors, directors and playwrights dedicate themselves on a nonprofit basis to producing up to 16 plays and almost 700 performances every year.

You might sight a celebrity or two on Halsted Street if you time a visit to the theater right. Ensemble members, including Joan Allen, John Mahoney, Gary Sinese, and John Malkovich, often perform or direct. The Pulitzer Prize winner and eventual Broadway hit August: Osage County was first staged here.
