There's lots of competition on this stretch of Ventura Boulevard, but Katsu-ya is one of the best venues on Studio City's crowded sushi row. The décor of this strip-mall eatery is not particularly distinctive, but the menu is intriguing and the execution first-rate. A "trailblazer for modern sushi", chef-owner Katsuya Uechi's Studio City "original" and its Encino and Northridge offshoots are famed for "exquisite" "rock-star" sushi and "innovative chalkboard specials" ("the spicy tuna on crispy rice continues to be a revelation"); sure, "you'll have to wait", service can be "rushed" and the settings could "use a face-lift", but even so, most find it's one...
