Viva Burt Reynolds!:
Swingers is where the 1970's live and rule. The staff is dressed like auto mechanics wearing uniforms with the Swingers logo, which is based on a race car. It's basically a diner with some healthy and tasty food. It's the kind of place to show up for a relaxing breakfast or some food after hitting a few bars. The menu is filled with a collage of 1970's icons. There is a counter if you just want to get a breakfast or a burger. Swingers is part of the Beverly Motor Lodge, but it is totally open to the public. Downsides: Swingers heyday was around 1993 and they have really slow pitiful service. Even if the paint is drying for breakfast, don't count on timely service--meaning a wait until they feel ready to serve you. There is a lot of street parking.

Boasting "the perfect LA vibe", these "hip", "rock 'n' roll" coffee shops on Beverly Boulevard and in Santa Monica sling all the "old standards" plus other inexpensive items "leaning toward the healthier side" and "lots of vegetarian options" too; sure, the service often comes "without a smile" and some say it's "all style and no substance", but for the "late-night munchies", it's hard to beat.

This hip coffee shop keeps L.A. scene-stealers happy with its retro comfort food. There's a second location at 802 Broadway (at Lincoln Ave.; tel. 310/393-9793) in Santa Monica.

Swingers Restaurant Review:
Only in L.A. would you expect to find a diner where meatloaf and mashed potatoes harmoniously co-exist with tofu sauté. Not surprisingly, the menu at this hipster haunt attracts everyone from edgy artists to local families. The concept is comfort food with flair, such as a grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with tomato, grilled onions and guacamole; an orange Creamsicle shake; and Mickey Mouse...

Once upon a time hipster was barely a word. But Swingers knew. Swingers had foresight. Now, retro-fied diner still considered hot. Sexy little servers, sexy little uniforms. Get the milkshakes, get the grilled cheese with avocado: look like a regular. The decor doesn't change, still seems cool. Animals and plaid and pleather. And flannel is cool again. Bust out the "I don't care, I'm just...

Information from the business

This is cutting-edge diner cuisine with a California flair, reasonable prices and a menu long enough to have something for everyone. The atmosphere is loud, visually (bright orange booths) and aurally (great jukebox and the place is always packed). The wait staff is attractive, professional and hipper than the patrons, if that's possible.
