Established in 1981, the museum is a fine arts museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of the art, artifacts and literature of the dog. Exhibiting paintings, drawings, watercolors, porcelains, and decorative arts, the museum offers one of the largest collections of dog art in the world.

Exhibits include works by artistic masters through the ages displayed in historic Jarville House, a Greek Revival-style home built in 1853.
