The Martinsville Studio

I was at a BYOB painting party of 19 people, and I barely received any help with my painting. In fact, this didn't seem like a teaching class at all. Jamie is a very nice and talented artist, but even if her assistant did show up, this number of people was too much for even a two-person team to handle. She has a free-style approach that, from the looks of her more talented students' paintings she has on display, works well for serious artists. But for a group of beginners and first-time recreational painters, a more traditional teaching method and structured environment may have worked better for a 2 1/2 hr. session. Also, she needs more landscape pictures for painters to draw, as not everyone has a vast array of workable pictures downloaded on their cell phones. If I didn't happen to have a particular photo in my purse, I would have had nothing to work with, as I didn't care to paint any of the still life props in the studio. I did, however, like the paint we used, and in general had a good time; but this was not what I expected.
