Horrible Customer Service from Dick the owner:
Trends in Tile Review

I’d like to share my experience with Trends in Tile in Brighton Mi. I recently purchased a substantial quantity of tile from Trends in Tile in Brighton Mi for a bathroom addition that included a walk in shower and a tile floor. This order was for ~ $2200 in tile materials.

When I picked up my order there were 4 tiles broken in the order and the owner Dick told me he would take care of the issue and get those replaced. When I got the order home I discovered that I had made a measurement error and I was a box of tile short for the floor tile. I called Trends in Tile on Monday and placed an order for additional box of tile (same day as replacement tiles for 4 broken tiles would have been ordered). Approximately 10 days later I was contacted and told my new tile was in I picked it up and was happy with my purchase.

When my tile installer came to start the project he found 1 box of tile was incompatible (but the 4 broken tile replacements were not) he said that it could not be used since it was significantly different sized than the other 9 boxes of tile. I immediately contacted Trends in Tile to get this incompatible tile replaced and that is where it all went downhill. I encountered a very rude Owner Dick when I asked him to replace the box that was not usable or help me understand why it was so different. He informed me a “good” tile installer would know how to take care of the issue which I explained to him that he showed me that the tile was ~ ¼” larger and would not work. I made a call to the tile manufacturer (Rango) and they informed me of 2 metrics related to tile. The color lot and caliper the bad box of tile was from a different color lot (which is ok that can be mixed into the other tiles to conceal). After further investigation I contacted Trends in Tile with the information that I think we have a caliper mismatch in the bad box of tile. Once again Dick was obstinate that he could do nothing for me and did not appear to understand what I wanted fixed. He claims to be an expert in tile yet seems to have little understanding of how dye lots and caliper work and what is compatible and what is not. After 4 screaming matches on the phone with Dick he offered up to take the tile back at a 25% restocking fee and less the $25 shipping charge leaving about $22 out of a $70 box of tile. Keep in mind this tile was unusable for me and all I wanted was a box of compatible tile. I told him this is unacceptable and it seems bad to lose a customer of $50 when he could work to make it right. He informed me that it was just business and he did not care.

I tried one last contact with Dick to see if he would give me the distributer contact information so I could ask them if they tracked the caliper number and dye lots when they shipped tile he told me he would not give me that information and if I called there again he would throw my request in the garbage as I tried to keep talking to him he told me he has spent too much time on this and he was done and not to call back and held the phone over the garbage can and said “hear this that’s me throwing your request in the circular file” after he hung up he called me back 5 min later and gave me the distributors phone number. I called the distributor and within a 10 min phone call we were able to locate a compatible box of tile but I was told Trends in Tile would have to process the paperwork. So I called Dick back and he told me that he was “done dealing with this” and I would have to go to the distributor to process the return. I explained to him that he needs to put the request in and then I will go to the distributor as needed to pick it up.

In the end most people would have given up or taken the $20 that Dick was offering. Trends in Tile has poor customer service if you consider buying tile from them please re think it as if you have a technical issue with your tile they WILL NOT work with your to resolved it without multiple phone calls and screaming matches. I also had to do the leg work to contact the manufacturer to understand why I was having this issue this is something that an expert in tile as Dick claims he is should be able to handle.

I always try to purchase locally but if this was Lowes, Home Depot, or The Tile Shop I feel I would have gotten much better service.

Trends in tile has lost me as a customer as well as my in-laws who had a difficult return experience with them and my sister in law who remodels homes and is always in search of high quality materials suppliers. I have spent $3500 in Trends in Tile (I purchased tile for a back splash a few years ago) so never again. If you consider Trends in Tile for your Tile needs be careful and make sure you understand what you are getting into.
