The White House is the official residence & principal workplace of the President of the United States. The house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban, and built between 1792 & 1800 of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone in the Neoclassical style. Residence of every U.S. president since John Adams.

Just before Christmas, visitors can tour the White House by candlelight to witness the lavish decorations. A string quartet plays, adding to the stately ambiance. The annual tour is held just three nights; it is best to arrive early.
