The corrugated-steel building looks more like a fish cannery than a restaurant, but it's one of the best places for an authentic Maine lobster dinner. It sits right on the water's edge, across the harbor from downtown Belfast. When you first walk in, you'll see tanks and tanks of live lobsters of varying size. The traditional meal here is the "shore dinner," consisting of clam chowder or...
I love this place; it's one of my favorite lobster shacks in Maine. Actually, even calling it a "shack" may be a euphemism. When you first enter the dirt parking lot and spy the unlovely red corrugated industrial building, you may think, "This must be a mistake." But persevere; beyond the hangar-sized door, you'll find a counter where friendly folks take your order amid long, green lobster tanks loudly gurgling seawater, then shout it to the lobster guys in boots. Eat upstairs where picnic tables are arrayed in an open, barnlike area, or out on the deck, with views across the river to Belfast. This is a place to get good and messy; the lobsters, served on paper plates with butter and corn on the cob, are delicious and relatively inexpensive. Stick to the shore dinners and steer away from the stews. And don't wear your finest threads -- unless you want them to smell like lobster. And get lots of napkins.
